Despite stiff competition from China's JF-17, South Korea's FA-50 and Russia's MiG-35, as well as a Yak-130, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) chairman and chief executive R. Madhavan said in an interview with PTI correspondent.

As part of the package, India has proposed to set up an MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility in Malaysia for its Russian Su-30 fighter fleet as it faces problems procuring spare parts for the Russian jets. Western sanctions against Moscow.

The head of the state-owned aerospace company said that if the deal closes, it will send a "very good signal" to other potential buyers of the aircraft and increase its overall export capacity.

"(The discussion) is almost at the final stage. We are the only country that will offer them support for the Su-30s, and also other than Russia; support," said Madhavan.

It turns out that the Chinese JF-17 is cheaper, but does not match the technical parameters of the Tejas Mk-IA variant and the Su-30 fleet maintenance proposal that India has offered.

A senior team and experts are expected to visit India soon to continue the procurement process.

Madhavan said the Tejas is a much better aircraft compared to the JF-17 and FA-50, and choosing an Indian aircraft will allow Malaysia to upgrade its fleet in the future.

Manufactured by HAL, the Tejas is a single-engine, highly agile high-speed multirole combat aircraft capable of operating in hazardous air environments.

India has begun work on the MK 2 version of the Tejas as well as an ambitious $5 billion project to develop the fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

"We're really the only ones who have covered everything they need and we've also met their budget requirements," says Madhavan.

"Nobody is giving them an upgrade as fast as possible. They will have an affordable alternative in the Tejas Mark 2 and may even think about AMCA," the HAL chief said.

He said that HAL would maintain the same level of service to Malaysia that it has provided to the Indian Air Force.

When asked if delivery of Tejas aircraft to the IAF would be affected if HAL wins the Malaysian contract, Madhavan said production of the aircraft will increase depending on demand.

According to the plan, HAL will start delivering the aircraft (Mk-IA variant) to the IAF in 2025 and all 83 aircraft should be delivered by 2030.

Madhavan said that if the deal with Malaysia is sealed, it will be a sign of the aircraft's viability, which will open up many other options.
