Indian Fighter Tejas Intensifies Dispute Over Argentine Air Force Order
Despite strong competition from China's JF-17 jet, South Korea's FA-50 and Russia's MiG-35 and Yak-130, Malaysia has been short of Indian aircraft, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chairman and managing director R. Madhavan said in an interview for PTI.
As part of the package, India has offered to set up an MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility in Malaysia for the Russian-origin Su-30 fighter jet as it faces difficulties in procuring spare parts for the aircraft from Russia. Western sanctions against Moscow.
The state-owned aerospace giant's top executive said the deal, if completed, would send a "very positive signal" to other customers looking to buy the plane and boost its overall export prospects.
"Negotiations are almost at the final stage. We are the only country that provides support for their Su-30 and other aircraft other than Russia; We are the only ones who can support this fleet at the scale they need," Madhavan said.

A team of top officials and experts is expected to visit India soon to take the procurement process forward.
Madhavan said the Tejas is a far superior aircraft compared to the JF-17 and FA-50 and the selection of an Indian aircraft would give Malaysia the option to decide on future fleet upgrades.

Modi Govt's Shift Towards Indigenous Tejas
In February last year, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract worth Rs 48,000 crore with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
India has embarked on a $5 billion project to develop the Tejas MK2 variant and the fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
"We were the only ones who covered everything they needed and we also met their budget requirements," Madhavan said.
"No one will offer them the innovations that we offer. They will have an alternative in Tejas Mark 2 and may even consider AMCA,” the HAL chief added.

He also said that HAL will maintain the same level of service it provides to the Indian Air Force to Malaysia.
When asked if supply of Tejas aircraft to the IAF will be affected if HAL gets the Malaysian contract, Madhavan said production of the aircraft will increase based on demand.
According to the plan, delivery of HAL aircraft (MK-IA variant) to the IAF will begin in 2025 and all 83 aircraft should be delivered by 2030.
If the deal with Malaysia goes through, Madhavan said, it would signal acceptance of the aircraft, opening up several other options.
